mechanics can go by feel. Once you get a feel for what normal belts are like, you shouldn't need a gauge. The best way I have found is to grab the belt with two fingers mid-way between two pulleys and try to twist the belt. WITH THE ENGINE OFF, of course, DUH!. I like twisting better than deflection but to each his own. That should get you close enough. If you have any other vehicles available, feel those belts to get an idea. If the belt is too loose it will slip and squeal.
